Does your home need exterior paint? You might not be able to tell. Keep in mind that a fresh paint job is a critical component of home maintenance, and that peeling or chipping paint can make a home that’s otherwise in great condition look run-down. Follow these handy tips to determine whether it’s time for you to hire a painter.
Create a Schedule
The general rule is that houses need to be painted every 5 to 10 years depending on the surface of your home, the climate in your area and the quality of your last paint job, including the quality of paint used. However, your home could need more (or less) frequent painting. For example, a wood surface might need repainting after 3 years, but high-quality painted brick can last up to 13 years.
Southern Exposure
The south and west sides of your house typically get the most sun – and are the first to show signs that your house needs repainting. Most likely, you’ll be able to see that your paint is fading. If you have any doubts, wipe a dry rag or towel in a dark color along the side of your house. If chalky paint comes off, that’s a sure sign it’s time to repaint.
Watch for Cracks
Cracking, chipping, peeling – these are all signs that the paint on your house has seen better days. By this point, you’re actually past due for repainting, since your house has become vulnerable to moisture. If you’ve got a stucco house, this applies to you, too – it’s a myth that stucco doesn’t need regular painting.
