How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home

With the coronavirus spreading across the country, it has become more important now than ever before to properly clean and disinfect our homes. Doing so will not only keep ourselves safe, but it will also keep our families safe by quickly killing any germs that enter our homes. If you’re not sure where to start, though, read over our tips on cleaning and disinfecting your home.

What you’ll need

How to Clean and Disinfect Your Home

Before you start cleaning, you’ll first need to check to make sure you have the right supplies. What you’ll need will depend on what kind of surfaces you have to clean.

  • – Gloves – either rubber gloves or disposable latex gloves will do
  • – Disinfecting wipes for kitchen appliances, light fixtures, doorknobs, countertops, and other surfaces you touch on a daily basis
  • – Disinfecting spray for couches, carpets, and other surfaces that can’t be wiped down
  • – Bleach mixture for floors (1 cup of bleach mixed with 5 gallons of water)
  • – Soap and water

Use soap and water first

Dirty surfaces should be cleaned with soap and water first before you start wiping them down with disinfecting wipes or bleach. Keep the water hot and scrub down the surfaces with a damp cloth or sponge, making sure that the cloth or sponge is new, or at least clean.

Disinfect

Once your surfaces are clean, you can then move on to disinfecting them. You can use disinfecting wipes for everyday surfaces, such as doorknobs or even remote controls, while saving the bleach for tougher surfaces such as your floors and (depending on the kind you have) your countertops. Not all disinfectants can kill COVID-19, however, so be sure to check the EPA’s website for all products that can be used against the virus.

Wash your hands afterwards

Even if you wore gloves while cleaning, it’s important to wash your hands immediately after cleaning and disinfecting your home. Follow the CDC’s guidelines on handwashing to ensure that you’re removing as much bacteria and germs as possible.
