When it comes to your home’s exterior, it can be difficult to tell when it needs a fresh coat of paint. You don’t need to have your property painted on a yearly basis, but just how often should you have it done? There are a variety of factors that determine the answer to this question, and it may be slightly different for everyone. Some of the things that will play a role include your exterior’s finish and of course the quality of paint that was last used.
Material
If you have aluminum siding on your home, you should be able to make it at least five years without needing another paint job. However, other materials aren’t as forgiving. While in some cases wood may be fine for seven years or longer, in other cases wood siding will need to be repainted every few years. At the very least, if it doesn’t need a completely new coat of paint, it will certainly need a few touchups here and there.
Neighborhood Requirements
In some cases, the frequency in which your home needs to be painted isn’t completely up to you. Some closed gate communities and neighborhoods require their residents to paint their homes in a set amount of time. This is done to maintain the overall look, feel, and quality of the neighborhood, ensuring certain homes don’t look rundown while others are pristine.
Paint
Finally, the quality of your home’s current paint will also determine how long it holds up. The color of the paint can also play a role. In general, just pay attention to the outside of your home and inspect it at least every few months. If the paint is beginning to crack and peel, you should get the job done sooner rather than later.
